原生能源是指从自然界开采，直接被使用的能源，又可称为"一次能源"，是自然资源（如煤炭、原油、阳光、铀等）中所蕴含的未经人为转化或转换的能源。
二次能源是指由一次能源经过加工转换以后得到的能源，包括电能、汽油、柴油、液化石油气和氢能等。二次能源又可以分为“过程性能源”和“含能体能源”，电能就是应用最广的过程性能源，而汽油和柴油是目前应用最广的含能体能源。
二次能源亦可解释为自一次能源中，所再被使用的能源，例如将煤燃烧产生蒸气能推动发电机，所产生的电能即可称为二次能源。
