叉烧包是广东具代表性的点心之一。以切成小块的叉烧，加入蚝油等调味成为馅料，外面以面粉包裹，放在蒸笼内蒸熟而成。叉烧包一般大小为直径五公分左右，一笼通常为三或四个。好的叉烧包采用肥瘦适中的叉烧作馅，包皮蒸熟后软滑刚好，稍为裂开露出叉烧馅料，渗发出阵阵叉烧的香味。又有一说传统叉烧包的标准要求是「高身雀笼型，大肚收笃，爆口而仅微微露馅」。在夏威夷，叉烧包被称作Manapua，是夏威夷语mea ʻono puaʻa（意为“美味的猪肉食品”）的缩写，在美属萨摩亚则被称为Keke pua'a。
