污染（环境污染），指自然的或人为的向环境中添加某种物质而超过环境的自净能力而产生危害的行为。主要对环境自然生态系统和人的健康产生危害，即使当时不造成危害，但后续效应有害也算是污染行为，如氮氧化物，虽然本身并不有害，但在阳光催化下与自由基等物质作用会转化成光化学烟雾，对生物造成危害，对建筑物造成腐蚀。

污染有两种规模，区域性污染和全球性污染。过去人们的注意力只放在区域性污染上面。如燃烧煤会产生烟雾和二氧化硫，有害人的呼吸道健康，降低污染的注意力主要放在如何去除烟雾和处理二氧化硫方面。但最近几十年，科学研究发现污染会造成全球效应，如燃烧煤会产生对人体健康不会造成危害的二氧化碳，但大量二氧化碳的排放会造成剧烈的温室效应，引起全球气候的异常变化。
