They weren't part of the perissodactyl group  itself; they're what's called a sister group.

This was the environment that gave rise to the very first perissodactyls, hoofed mammals with an odd number of toes.

From the anatomy of its feet, they could tell that it was a perissodactyl, or an " odd-toed ungulate, " that stood on three toes.

They were also most closely related to a group  called perissodactyls or odd-toed ungulates - like horses and rhinos - and not the group  that includes elephants and manatees.

One of the first perissodactyls we know of was Hyracotherium, a small ungulate whose fossils were first discovered in England and named, for some reason, for its supposed resemblance to the rock hyrax.

Odd-toed ungulate

Perissodactyl)

Odd-toed ungulate

Perissodactyl)
The white rhinoceros is the largest living perissodactyl
South American tapirs are among the few species of extant perissodactyl with a trunk
The distribution of most species, such as the Indian rhinoceros, has declined in recent decades.

Perissodactyls, otherwise known as odd-toed ungulates, compose an order of mammals characterized by an odd number of toes and by hindgut fermentation with somewhat simple stomachs. As large grazers they digest plant cellulose in their intestines rather than in one or more stomach chambers, unlike the even-toed ungulates. The order includes three extant families: Equidae, including horses, donkeys, and zebras, Rhinocerotidae, rhinos and Tapiridae, tapirs, with a total of about 17 species. In spite of their very different appearance they were recognized as related families in the 19th century by the zoologist Richard Owen, who also coined the term.
