意译（sense-for-sense translation）是通过换句话，重述一个文本或段落。“Sense-for-sense translation”的另一个术语是paraphrase。“Sense-for-sense translation”不同于“free translation”，后者指“unfaithful”的翻译。意译指单词在从一种语言翻译到另一种语言时根据其语意而不是根据其读音来进行翻译。与之相对的是音译。除了专有名词（包括人名、地名、国名等），翻译时一般采用意译，但有些专有名词可能因意译较音译易读好记的关系，而以意译为主。例如美国多个城市的名称均为Springfield，意译为「春田市」，音译为「斯普林菲尔德」。
