已被发现海水化学物质及元素有92种，其中11种（氯、钠、镁、硫、钙、钾、溴、锶、硼、碳、氟）占海水溶解物质总量的99.8%，其它含量甚微；目前可以从海水中提取60多种化学物质。

世界海水的盐度大约为35psu（35‰），这意味着平均每一升海水中就含有35克的盐（大部分是氯化钠）溶解其中。高于人体溶质度级别，非直接饮用水来源。

海水有机物由海洋生物代谢、死亡过程产生，或者是陆地上生物活动生成并由大气和河流带进海洋。这些有机物最终大部分变成二氧化碳，被浮游植物吸收，经过光合作用变成有机碳，形成循环；小部分沉入海底，进入海洋沉积。

On average, seawater in the world's oceans has a salinity of about 3.5% (35 g/L, or 599 mM). This means that every kilogram (roughly one litre by volume) of seawater has approximately 35 grams (1.2 oz) of dissolved salts (predominantly sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl−) ions). Average density at the surface is 1.025 kg/l. Seawater is denser than both fresh water and pure water (density 1.0 kg/l at 4 °C (39 °F)) because the dissolved salts increase the mass by a larger proportion than the volume. The freezing point of seawater decreases as salt concentration increases. At typical salinity, it freezes at about −2 °C (28 °F). The coldest seawater ever recorded (in a liquid state) was in 2010, in a stream under an Antarctic glacier, and measured −2.6 °C (27.3 °F). Seawater pH is typically limited to a range between 7.5 and 8.4. However, there is no universally accepted reference pH-scale for seawater and the difference between measurements based on different reference scales may be up to 0.14 units.
