洋即大洋，是地球海洋的主体，为海洋的中心部分。世界大洋的总面积约占海洋面积的89%。大洋的水深一般在3000米以上，最深处可达1万多米。大洋离陆地远，不受陆地的影响，其水文和盐度的变化不大，每个大洋都有自己独特的洋流和潮汐系统。大洋的水透明度很大，水中的杂质少。世界上的大洋共有5个，按照面积由大到小分别为太平洋、大西洋、印度洋、南冰洋和北冰洋。「四大洋」则分别为太平洋、大西洋、印度洋和北冰洋。

海水覆盖了地球约71%~72%的表面积（~3.6×10 km），可以分为数个主要的洋及一些较小的海。地球上97%的水都在海洋中，但海洋学者认为人类只探索了海洋中的5%。海洋的的总体积约13亿立方公里（3.1亿立方英里），平均深度约3,682米（12,080英尺）。

An ocean (fromAncient GreekὨκεανός, transc. Okeanós, the sea of classical antiquity) is a body of saline water that composes much of a planet's hydrosphere. On Earth, an ocean is one of the major conventional divisions of the World Ocean, which covers almost 71% of its surface. These are, in descending order by area, the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic Oceans. The word sea is often used interchangeably with "ocean" in American English but, strictly speaking, a sea is a body of saline water (generally a division of the world ocean) partly or fully enclosed by land.
