在现代的电脑数值控制系统中，工件的设计高度依赖电脑辅助设计（CAD）及电脑辅助制造（CAM）等软件。电脑辅助制造软件解析设计模型并计算加工过程中的移动指令，透过后处理器将移动指令及其他加工过程中需使用到的辅助指令转换成数值控制系统可以读取的格式，之后将后处理器产生的文件加载电脑数值控制工具机中进行工件加工。
