核合成是从已经存在的核子（质子和中子）创造出新原子核的过程。原始的核子来自大霹雳之后已经冷却至一千万度以下，由夸克胶子形成的等离子体海洋。在之后的几分钟内，只有质子和中子，也有少量的锂和铍（原子量都是7）被合成，但相对来说仍只有很少的数量。太初核合成的第一个过程可以称为核起源（成核作用），随后产生各种元素的核合成，包括所有的碳、氧等元素，都是发生在原始恒星内部的核融合或核分裂。

Elements beyond iron are made in large stars with slow neutron capture (s-process), followed by expulsion to space in gas ejections (see planetary nebulae). Elements heavier than iron may be made in supernovae after the r-process, involving a dense burst of neutrons and rapid capture by the element.

Hydrogen and helium are most common, residuals within the paradigm of the Big Bang.[8] The next three elements (Li, Be, B) are rare because they are poorly synthesized in the Big Bang and also in stars. The two general trends in the remaining stellar-produced elements are: (1) an alternation of abundance of elements according to whether they have even or odd atomic numbers, and (2) a general decrease in abundance, as elements become heavier. Within this trend is a peak at abundances of iron and nickel, which is especially visible on a logarithmic graph spanning fewer powers of ten, say between logA=2 (A=100) and logA=6 (A=1,000,000).

Nucleosynthesis is the process that creates new atomic nuclei from pre-existing nucleons, primarily protons and neutrons. The first nuclei were formed about three minutes after the Big Bang, through the process called Big Bang nucleosynthesis. It was then that hydrogen and helium formed to become the content of the first stars, and this primeval process is responsible for the present hydrogen/helium ratio of the cosmos.
