北瓶鼻鲸（学名Hyperoodon ampullatus）又称北大西洋瓶鼻鲸，平头鲸，瓶头鲸和陡头鲸。可说是人类研究最深入的喙鲸类，其中有一部分要归因于长期的捕鲸历史。19世纪时，有数字英国与挪威的自然学家参与捕鲸的行业，他们提供了许多关于被捕获的北瓶鼻鲸的细节描述，而捕鲸业也提供了大量尸体供科学研究之用。1770年，Forster在“Kalm, Travels into North America”一书的译本注释中首次提到北瓶鼻鲸，当时的学名为“Balaena ampullatus”，种名源自拉丁文的ampulla，意思是“瓶子”或“烧瓶”，反映其嘴喙形状。1776年Müllar将名称改为Balaena rostrata，移入瓶鼻鲸属之后有很长一段时间都叫Hyperoodon rostrata，直到20世纪初才变更为现今的有效学名Hyperoodon ampullatus。

The northern bottlenose whale is a species of bottlenose whale in the ziphiid family, and being one of two members of the genus Hyperoodon. The northern bottlenose was hunted heavily by Norway and Britain in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is one of the deepest diving mammals known, reaching depths of 1453 m (4767 ft).
