化名，指某人在本名之外使用的虚拟姓名，很多时候，目的在于掩饰自己的真实身份。笔名、网名、艺名、伪名、佛教僧人的法号和罗马教皇即位后采用的教名都是化名的一种。需要注意的是，字、号、谱名、学名、斋名与小名等别名于某些情况内是相当于本名，不应与化名相混。

也有人以化名行世，而摒弃本名的。如前中国共产党主席华国锋，本名苏铸，华国锋是他参加抗日游击队时的化名，因而沿用。其他国家也有这样的现象，广为人知的苏联领导人弗拉基米尔·列宁（本名：弗拉基米尔·乌利扬诺夫）、约瑟夫·斯大林（本名：约瑟夫·朱加什维利），越南共产主义政权领导人胡志明（本名阮必成，号爱国）、美国作家马克·吐温（原名塞姆·朗赫恩·克列门斯）均是化名。
