新兴宗教又译新宗教，是一个宗教学上的分类用语，指近代（约19世纪末期以后）所创立的宗教派别。最早源自日本，是比较宗教学者为了研究的方便所创立的概括性词汇。 在日本，“新兴宗教”一词往往带有轻蔑意味，1960年以后逐渐使用“新宗教”，1980年代日本宗教界与学术界抛弃了“新兴宗教”一词，改用“新宗教”。事实上，新宗教不一定兴盛，所以“新兴宗教”的说法不够全面，而新宗教或者新教则表明了这类宗教在产生时间的特征。在日本，一般来说，新宗教或新兴宗教，指明治维新之后才出现的宗教教派。 很少有教派会自称为新兴宗教。因对应时代环境的不同，各自有其认知与界定，导致在定义与范畴上极为混淆，背后纠缠着复杂的社会背景与文化因素，在讨论上几乎是南辕北辙，很难产生共识，其中还夹杂着不少的成见与误解。新兴宗教在一方面为传统宗教作出补足，部分亦积极参与社会运动。然而，有一些打着新兴宗教旗号的组织强调个人崇拜，意图利用思想控制来操控会众的行为，以达至商业利益、甚或鼓动信徒作出反社会的行动，这引起了宗教界人士的关注。 |
