Newfie (also Newf or sometimes Newfy) is a colloquial term used in Canada for someone who is from Newfoundland. The word, which in modern Canadian can be used to describe a foolish or stupid person, was first recorded in a 1942 dictionary of slang. However, at this time Newfie only referred to Newfoundland itself; a Newfoundlander was a Newfier.
