独居石（Monazite），也称磷铈镧矿，化学成分为（Ce,Y,La,Th）PO₄，单斜晶系，晶体常呈板状、板柱状或楔状，黄褐色、棕色或红色，树脂或玻璃光泽，硬度5-5.5，比重4.9-5.5。是提取稀土元素和钍的矿物原料。

早先发现这种矿物会放射钍-232，之后会吸收慢中子而变成铀-233，而铀-233可作核燃料之用。1940合成又发现该矿石，可合成钚-239。而钚-239常被用在核子反应炉及核武器中

独居石主要产出于花岗岩、花岗片麻岩、伟晶岩及岩浆成因的碳酸盐岩中，常形成矿砂，产区以巴西，印度，斯里兰卡，澳大利亚，南非，中国东北为主。其中，巴西，印度等国已禁采。

Monazite is a reddish-brown phosphate mineral containing rare earth metals. It occurs usually in small isolated crystals. It has a hardness of 5.0 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness and is relatively dense, about 4.6 to 5.7 g/cm.
