军需泛指军队在和平或者是战争时期所需要的物资的总称。这些物资当中可以概略分成日常生活和战备所需两类。

军队在日常生活当中，无论是在平时或者是战时，许多物资是绝对必要的。譬如各种食物、衣服布料、各种清洁与医疗用品，各类办公与事务相关的消耗品或者是器材、各种相关电器产品、各种运输或者是保存器具等等。许多人一般人日常生活中需要使用到的物品，也都包含在军需品当中。有些类型的物品虽然与一般平民使用的相似，但是在规格或者是品质要求上可能比较特殊或者是严格。譬如说军队中使用的衣服、布料或者毛巾类的产品，在颜色上有固定的需求，无法任由用户自由选择。亦泛指能形成战术、战略目的胜利成功所运用之物品，亦属之。

The term is also often used in a general sense ("men and materiel") to describe the needs of a functioning army. Materiel management consists of continuing actions relating to planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, controlling, and evaluating the application of resources to ensure the effective and economical support of military forces. It includes provisioning, cataloging, requirements determination, acquisition, distribution, maintenance, and disposal. The terms "materiel management", "materiel control", "inventory control", "inventory management", and "supply management" are synonymous.
