毛利人（Māori）是新西兰境内的原住民，属于南岛语族波利尼西亚人。其民族语言原本没有文本，1840年开始以拉丁字母作为民族语言之文本。民族信仰数泛灵的多神信仰。「Māori」这个词在毛利语语境中表示「正常」或「正常人」之意，当时的欧洲人进入新西兰地，毛利人便如此自称。外邦人则称呼「Pakeha」（原意有「反常人」的意思。）。多数考古学和历史学者认为毛利民族是从库克群岛和玻里尼西亚地区而来。

现在毛利人总人口70多万人，其中新西兰有62万，澳洲有12.6万，英国有8千人，美国和加拿大有4千左右。

毛利语是新西兰官方语言之一。

The Māori (/ˈmaʊri/; Māori pronunciation: [ˈmaːɔɾi],  listen) are the indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand. The Māori originated with settlers from eastern Polynesia, who arrived in New Zealand in several waves of canoe voyages at some time between 1250 and 1300 CE. Over several centuries in isolation, the Polynesian settlers developed a unique culture that became known as the "Māori", with their own language, a rich mythology, distinctive crafts and performing arts. Early Māori formed tribal groups, based on eastern Polynesian social customs and organisation. Horticulture flourished using plants they introduced, and later a prominent warrior culture emerged.
