马耳他语，马耳他的官方语言之一（另一种是英语）属亚非语系闪语族。1975年时的使用人口逾37万（全世界马耳他人约有100万）。在澳大利亚和北美诸国的马耳他移民中也有数量不等的用户。

马耳他语起源于阿拉伯语，阿拉伯人占领马耳他后带来阿拉伯语。在此以后的几个世纪，马耳他多次为外来势力所侵占，从意大利语、法语和英语里吸收了大量外来词语，并逐渐脱离阿拉伯语成为一种独立语言。

马耳他语用户可以与北非阿拉伯人作一般交谈，使其在某种程度上仍可被视为一种西部阿拉伯方言。在很长一段时期内，马耳他语只是口头语言，没有文本。18世纪末、19世纪初，马耳他出现了用拉丁字母编纂的第一部马耳他语词典。1934年，马耳他文本形式经过修改定型马耳他语用拉丁字母，但不用Y(y)，在G和Z增加了带点的字母 (Ġ, ġ), (Ż, ż) 、加一竖的H (Ħ, ħ) 和在词首不发音但在词尾发音的 G 加 h一竖上多一横 (Għ, għ) 等4个字母。

Maltese (Maltese:Malti) is the national language of Malta and a co-official language of the country alongside English, while also serving as an official language of the European Union, the only Semitic language so distinguished. Maltese is descended from Siculo-Arabic, the variety of Arabic that developed in Sicily and was later introduced to Malta, between the end of the ninth century and the end of the twelfth century. Maltese is a unique branch of Arabic because it has evolved independently of Literary Arabic into a standardized language over the past 800 years in a gradual process of Latinisation.
