保证金（Margin）是指以抵押来买卖证券、期权或期货的交易，而抵押的作用是抵消处理孖展的银行或证券行的信用风险。此等风险会在以下情况出现：
- 买入多于按金价值证券或期权，包括在首次公开募股的情况
- 超卖手头上的证券或期权
- 买入期货
孖展以上列第一种。而抵押一般包括现金（按金或保证金）及购入的证券，并存放在孖展户口之内。
