Wilson looked at Macomber with his flat, blue, machine-gunner's eyes and the other smiled back at him.

威尔逊用他那双机关枪手的没有表情的蓝眼睛望着麦康伯；麦康伯用微笑回答他。

" What do we do? " asked Macomber.

“咱们怎么办？”麦康伯问。

Macomber's face was shining. " You know something did happen to me, " he said. " I feel absolutely different."

Macomber had not thought how the lion felt as he got out of the car.

" I don't want to go in there, " said Macomber.

" Of course, " Wilson said. " Look, " he said to Macomber, and pointed. " See that patch of bush? "

Macomber laughed, a very natural hearty laugh. " You know I have, " he said. " I really have."

" It's not going to be a damned bit like the lion, " Wilson told her. " Did you want another drink, Macomber? "

" Why not order her to stay in camp? " Wilson said to Macomber.

" Let's get the drink, " said Macomber. In his life he had never felt so good.

Macomber stepped out of the curved opening at the side of the front seat, onto the step and down onto the ground.

麦康伯从前座边的半圆形的缺口里跨出来，站在踏级上，然后跨到地面上。

Macomber aimed carefully at the center of the huge, jerking, rage-driven neck and shot. At the shot the head dropped forward.

麦康伯仔细瞄准它那巨大的、被狂怒折磨得扭动的脖子的正中心，开了一枪。枪声一响，脑袋就搭拉下来。

" Let's not have any ordering, nor, " turning to Macomber, " any silliness. Francis, " Margot said quite pleasantly.

" 咱们不要什么吩咐，" 玛戈转过脸去，非常高兴地对麦康伯说，" 也不要傻头傻脑，弗朗西斯。"

In the car Macomber's wife sat very white-faced. " You were marvellous, darling, " she said to Macomber. " What a ride" .

麦康伯的妻子坐在汽车里，脸色煞白。" 你干得真出色，亲爱的，" 她对麦康伯说，" 汽车开得真惊险。"

Macomber took the big gun and Wilson said: " Keep behind me and about five yards to the right and do exactly as I tell you."

麦康伯接过那支大枪；威尔逊说：“走在我后面，约摸偏右五码，我叫你怎么做就怎么做。”

Macomber's wife had not looked at him nor he at her and he had sat by her in the back seat with Wilson sitting in the front seat.

麦康伯的妻子没有望他，他也没有望她；他坐在后面的座位上她的身旁；威尔逊呢，坐在前面的座位上。

Macomber stood there feeling sick at his stomach, his hands that held the Springfield still cocked, shaking, and his wife and Robert Wilson were standing by him.

麦康伯站在那儿，胃里感到难受，他握着斯普林菲尔德枪的双手仍然准备着射击，在哆嗦发抖；他的妻子和罗伯特·威尔逊站在他身旁。

Macomber sat grim and furious. Margot smiled at him. She looked younger today, more innocent and fresher and not so professionally beautiful.

麦康伯坐着，绷起了脸，一副气冲冲的模样。玛戈呢，向他微笑着。她今天看上去好象更年轻、更天真、更娇嫩，不象平时那样显露出一种做作的美。

Then Wilson shot, the roar deafening him, and he could see the bull stagger. Macomber shot again, aiming carefully, and down he came, onto his knees.

接着，威尔逊开枪了，声音响得几乎震聋他的耳朵，他可以看到那条野牛脚步摇晃了。麦康伯仔细瞄准，又开了一枪；接着，它倒下来，跪在地上。

Then he felt embarrassed at asking it and before Macomber could answer he went on, " We all take a beating every day, you know, one way or another."

他话一出口，顿时感到有点窘，没有等麦康伯回答，就接着说：“咱们全都天天在挨揍，你知道，不是在这个方面，就是在另一方面。”
