木姜子属植物为樟目樟科的常绿落叶乔木或灌木。木姜子属涵盖200至400个品种，广泛分布于澳大利亚、新西兰、北美洲、南美洲及亚洲的热带、亚热带地区。

木姜子属植物仅中国就有约70个品种，大多生长于华南和西南的温暖地区。木姜子属植物是中国境内彝族的重要调味料，尤其以四川彝区和云南西北彝区最为喜爱。彝族人统称其居住地分布的木姜子属植物为“木库”（凉山彝语：ꂤꈐ，拉丁转写mhùku），使用汉语（西南官话）时一般直接称其为“木姜子”。彝族一般采用木姜子的种子和根作为香料，但多采集野生的木姜子，一般不进行人工培植。彝族人在使用木姜子时，种子通常是碾碎成末使用，也有的菜肴是将木姜子种子用手揉搓破碎后直接添加入菜；根一般是在需要调味时用刀具刮下粉末使用。彝族人一般认为木姜子的根香味更浓郁，因而是更上乘的调味料。

Litsea is a genus of evergreen or deciduous trees or shrubs belonging to the Laurel family, Lauraceae. The genus includes 136 accepted species in tropical and subtropical areas of both hemispheres.

Trees or shrubs, dioecious. The leaves can be either deciduous or evergreen depending on species, and aromatic. The flowers are from greenish to white, greenish-yellow, yellowish.
