光年（英语：light-year）是长度单位之一，指光在真空中一年时间内传播的距离，大约9.46兆公里（9.46×10公里或5.88×10英里） 。

光年一般用于天文学中，用来量度很大的距离，如太阳系跟另一恒星的距离。光年不是时间的单位。 天文学中另三个常用的单位是秒差距、天文单位与光秒，一秒差距等于3.26光年，一天文单位相当于地球和太阳间的平均距离，一光秒是光一秒所走的距离略短于地球与平均的月球距离。

例如，世界上最快的飞机可以达到每小时1万1260公里的时速（2004年11月16日，美国航空航天局（NASA）的飞机最高速度纪录是1万1260公里/小时），依照这样的速度，飞越一光年的距离需要用9万5848年。而常见的客机大约是885公里/小时，这样飞行1光年则需要122万0330年。目前人造的最快物体是1970年代的德国和美国NASA联合建造并发射的Helio 2卫星，最高速度为70.22公里/秒（即25万2792公里/小时），这样的速度飞越1光年的距离约需要4000年的时间。

A light-year (or light year, abbreviation: ly) is a unit of length used informally to express astronomical distances. It is approximately 9 trillion kilometres (or about 6 trillion miles). As defined by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), a light-year is the distance that light travels in vacuum in one Julian year (365.25 days). Because it includes the word year, the term light-year is sometimes misinterpreted as a unit of time.
