It is located in the province of Eastern Finland and is part of the Northern Savonia region. The municipality has a population of 10,008 (30 June 2015) and covers an area of 1,519.67 square kilometres (586.75 sq mi) of which 383.62 km (148.12 sq mi) is water. The population density is 8.81 inhabitants per square kilometre (22.8/sq mi).
