浮萍科是单子叶植物纲，泽泻目的一个科。浮萍科有5属，38种。早期的分类系统将浮萍科分类为天南星目下的一个科，而近期的分类系统则将浮萍科并入到天南星科内，同时将天南星科分类为泽泻目下的一个科。

水生植物，草本，无茎或叶，植株由小型的叶状体组成，叶状体漂浮在水面或沉入水面下，有根或无根。通常以出芽生殖做无性繁殖，偶而会开花做有性生殖，花有1雌蕊，2雄蕊（也有人说是由三朵单性花组成的花序）。果实为胞果，囊状的果实内有种子和空气，使其可以在水上漂浮。无根萍属的花是世界上最小的花，花长只有0.3毫米。

浮萍科植物是水鸟的重要食物来源，无根萍属在东南亚部份地区也被拿来做食物。某些浮萍生长快速，被用来装饰淡水鱼缸与池塘，在大池塘中，这些浮萍一但蔓延开来，可能就很难被完全清除掉。

Duckweeds, or water lens, are flowering aquatic plants which float on or just beneath the surface of still or slow-moving bodies of fresh water and wetlands. Also known as "bayroot," they arose from within the arum or aroid family (Araceae), and therefore, often are classified as the subfamily Lemnoideae within the Araceae. Classifications created prior to the end of the 20th century classify them as a separate family, Lemnaceae.
