主导动机（德语：Leitmotiv）指一个贯穿整部音乐作品的动机。动机是音乐语汇的短小构成，通常的长度在一到两个小节。例如贝多芬第五交响曲的命运敲门的动机，这个动机就是整个命运的主导动机，整部交响曲就是由它构成，不单单在第一乐章中反复出现，在所有乐章都频繁变形出现，第三乐章扭打的旋律就是由3个命运动机的变形组合而成。而第四乐章由铜管奏出的胜利主题也可以视为命运动机的变形。

华格纳是真正提出这一概念的作曲家，主导动机在他手下发扬光大，并且影响了他所身处的时代的作曲家。他在自己的歌剧里面用主导动机组织情节。用一特定的旋律表示某一概念（实在或抽像），如《尼伯龙根的指环》，禁欲。这些旋律起到重要的剧情提示作用，例如在《女武神》中，齐格林德说到「一个陌生人走了进来」，音乐响起了「瓦哈拉的动机」，提示到此人就是沃坦，但齐格林德本人可能还不知道这一点。

A leitmotif or leitmotiv /ˌlaɪtmoʊˈtiːf/ is a "short, constantly recurring musical phrase" associated with a particular person, place, or idea. It is closely related to the musical concepts of idée fixe or motto-theme. The spelling leitmotif is an anglicization of the German Leitmotiv, literally meaning "leading motif", or perhaps more accurately, "guiding motif". A musical motif has been defined as a "short musical idea ... melodic, harmonic, or rhythmic, or all three", a salient recurring figure, musical fragment or succession of notes that has some special importance in or is characteristic of a composition: "the smallest structural unit possessing thematic identity."
