概率论是研究随机性或不确定性等现象的数学。更精确地说，概率论是用来仿真实验在同一环境下会产生不同结果的情况。典型的随机实验有掷骰子、扔硬币、抽扑克牌以及轮盘游戏等。

数学家和精算师认为概率是在0至1闭区间内的数字，指定给一发生与失败是随机的「事件」。概率 $P(A)$ 根据概率公理来指定给事件 $A$ 。

一事件 $A$ 在一事件 $B$ 确定发生后会发生的概率称为 $B$ 给之 $A$ 的条件概率；其数值为 ${P(B \cap A) \over P(B)}$ 。若 $B$ 给之 $A$ 的条件概率和 $A$ 的概率相同时，则称 $A$ 和 $B$ 为独立事件。且 $A$ 和 $B$ 的此一关系为对称的，这可以由一同价叙述：「当 $A$ 和 $B$ 为独立事件时， $P(A \cap B) = P(A)P(B)$ 。」中看出。

概率论中的两个重要概念为随机变量和随机变量的概率分布两种。
