Isopsephy（源自希腊文，意译「相等鹅卵石」）意思是「把数值相加而凑成一个数字」，是进制的核心概念。早期希腊人把鹅卵石排成样式以学习数学的算术和几何学。鹅卵石的拉丁字是「calculi」就是英文本「calculate」的来源。

数值进位和 Gematria（用数字作为密件的字母代码，源于希伯来）的关系颇亲密。其他地方亦有效法，阿拉伯文的版本参见 Abjad numerals。Gematria 的拉丁文版亦流行于中世纪至文艺复兴的欧洲，它的遗产余下在当今的数字命理学（numerology）和共济会密码（英语：masonic cipher）。

Isopsephy (/ˈaɪsəpˌsɛfi/; ἴσος isos meaning "equal" and ψῆφος psephos meaning "pebble") is the Greek word for the practice of adding up the number values of the letters in a word to form a single number. Isopsephism, the occurrence of isopsephy, is frequently used as a synonym. The early Greeks used pebbles arranged in patterns to learn arithmetic and geometry.
