集装箱，在香港及**一般称为货柜，在中国大陆一般称为集装箱，是一种按规格标准化的钢制箱子。集装箱的特色，在于其格式划一，并可以层层重叠，所以可以大量放置于特别设计的远洋轮船，为世界各地的生产商提供比空运更廉价的大量运输服务。一般的集装箱大船可以装五千到八千箱。货物集装之后，在水陆空转运的过程中就不需要再卸下装上卸下装上，所以可以节省货主和船东的经费。

集装箱在上船以前，一般由大卡车拉或者用火车从其他地方运往货柜码头；与此同时，当货物到岸后，亦再经由这些交通工具把货物从货柜码头运往目的地。
