西方的标点符号在16世纪主要有朗诵学派和句法学派两个学派，主要是由古典时期希腊文和拉丁文演变而来，在17世纪后进入稳定阶段。俄文的标点是依希腊文而来，到了18世纪采用西欧的标点方法。

中国古籍印刷中罕有标点符号，然近人管锡华研究指出古代中文标点符号发达，近代自欧美舶来了数种标点，与固有符号糅合，渐成今式。日本在8世纪时，使用返点和训点作为标点系统。
