虚拟社区，又称电子社区或电脑社区，是互联网用户交互后，产生的一种社会群体，由各式各样的网络社区所构成。 虚拟社区一词在Howard Rheingold于1993年出版的「虚拟社区」一书被介绍。Rheingold在其著作中指出虚拟社区系源自于电脑中，介传播所建构而成的虚拟空间（Cyberspace），是一种社会集合体（Social aggregation），它的发生来自于虚拟空间上有足够的人、足够的情感、与人际关系在网络上长期发展。 Rheingold认为虚拟社区是一群人在网络上从事公众讨论，经过一段时间，彼此拥有足够的情感之后，所形成人际关系的网络。Rheingold（2000）认为虚拟社区是一种新型的社会组织，并有以下四种特质：1.表达的自由；2.缺乏集中的控制；3.多对多的传播；4.成员出于自愿的行为。
