棘鱼纲是一类早已绝灭、仅存在于古生代的最早的有颌鱼类。有颌鱼类在漫长的历史演化中形成了两大主支一真口鱼类和板鳃类。棘鱼类和硬骨鱼类共同组成了真口鱼类，牠们有着共同的祖先，在真口鱼类中代表了两条独立的进化路线。

同其他所有的原始有颌鱼类一样，棘鱼具有偶鳍，耳内有三个半规管，脑颅和咽颅是分开的两部分，鳃长在鳃弓的外侧，领是由颇弓骨骼形成的。棘鱼类通常是较小的鱼，长度很少超过20厘米，然而一些种类可超过两米。棘鱼具有似鳖的外形，两对偶鳍，一个歪形尾，除了尾鳍以外，所有鳍的前方都具棘刺，这也是棘鱼名字的来源。

Acanthodii or acanthodians (sometimes called spiny sharks) is a paraphyletic class of extinct fish, sharing features with both bony fish and cartilaginous fish. In form they resembled sharks, but their epidermis was covered with tiny rhomboid platelets like the scales of holosteans (gars, bowfins). They represent several independent phylogenetic branch of fishes leading to the still-extant Chondrichthyes.
