政府间海洋学委员会按联合国教科文组织大会第2.31条而成立。
第一次会议在1961年10月27日于巴黎的联合国教育科学文化组织总部举行。共有40个国家成为委员会的创始成员国。
至2004年委员会一共有129个成员国，设有会员大会，运行理事会和秘书处。秘书处设在法国巴黎。此外，委员会亦设有一些附属机构。

Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission 政府间海洋学委员会The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC/UNESCO) was established by resolution 2.31 adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO. It first met in Paris at Unesco Headquarters from 19 to 27 October 1961. Initially, 40 States became members of the Commission. The IOC assists governments to address their individual and collective ocean and coastal management needs, through the sharing of knowledge, information and technology as well as through the co-ordination of programs and building capacity in ocean and coastal research, observations and services. |
