战间期，指的是自第一次世界大战结束到第二次世界大战爆发的这段时期。这一时期，世界局势仍然十分动荡。欧洲在这一时期仍然处于从第一次世界大战所带来的巨大创伤恢复的时期。而在北美（指美国与加拿大），1920年代曾经有过经济的快速成长（咆哮的二十年代），但在1929年爆发的经济大恐慌使得情势发生了巨大变化。也正是在这一时期，魏玛共和国崩溃，纳粹主义兴起。1930年代后，随着九一八事变、日本创建满洲国；意大利入侵阿比西尼亚；德奥合并等事件发生，人类距离一场新的世界大战已经越来越近。1939年9月，德国入侵波兰，第二次世界大战全面爆发，战间期宣告结束。
