Instrumental action

The names Instrumental action and Value-rational action distinguish two kinds of behavior philosophers and social scientists call rational. They call an action instrumentally-rational when the actor judges it to be the right means—an instrument—for coping with unique conditions to achieve a desired end. They call an action value-rational when the actor accepts it as a universally right end—a value in itself—regardless of conditions.
