感染是指由其他物种在身为宿主的个体内进行有害的复制、繁殖过程。

具传染性的生物体会寻找并且利用宿主体内资源，以利自身生存，但这个过程一旦干扰了宿主正常的生理运作，可能造成慢性症状、急性症状、坏疽（gangrene）、器官及组织被吞噬、甚至死亡，因此这类物种又称为病原体，通常是微生物，但事实上感染的定义可以更广，包括细菌、病毒、寄生虫、真菌、类病毒，甚或是具有致病能力、但并非生物的传染性物质，例如普恩蛋白。由于医学领域研究的疾病多由传染而来，传染病因此成为医学中重要的一个学术分支。

传染在中文定义上不同于感染，传染乃是指疾病或病原体由一个体转移至另一个体上的过程。但由于一般可感染生物体的疾病，也通常具有传染力，因此两者常混用。
