一些数学书籍使用和（分别意为「单位矩阵」和「基本矩阵」），不过I更加普遍。

特别是单位矩阵作为所有阶矩阵的环的单位，以及作为由所有阶可逆矩阵构成的一般线性群的单比特（单位矩阵明显可逆，单位矩阵乘自己，仍是单位矩阵）。

这些阶矩阵经常表示来自维矢量空间自己的线性变换，表示恒等函数，而不理会基。

In linear algebra, the identity matrix, or sometimes ambiguously called a unit matrix, of size n is the n × n square matrix with ones on the main diagonal and zeros elsewhere. It is denoted by I_n, or simply by I if the size is immaterial or can be trivially determined by the context. (In some fields, such as quantum mechanics, the identity matrix is denoted by a boldface one, 1; otherwise it is identical to I.) Less frequently, some mathematics books use U or E to represent the identity matrix, meaning "unit matrix" and the German word "Einheitsmatrix", respectively.
