鬣狗（学名：Hyaenidae），哺乳动物，是体型中等、生活在非洲、阿拉伯半岛、亚洲和印度次大陆的陆生肉食性动物。牠们同属于一科：鬣狗科。外形略像狗，头比狗的头短而圆，毛棕黄色或棕褐色，有许多不规则的黑褐色斑点，食用兽类尸体腐烂的肉维生。

鬣狗过着母系社会体系的群居群猎生活，雌性的体重通常比雄性重12％，是两性中相对强壮，且具支配权地位的一方，整群母鬣狗中只有一只母首领才有权可以生育下一代，其他母鬣狗必须负责帮忙照料仔犬。每次狩猎距离最远长达100公里远，狩猎中难免有犬只受伤，受伤者会留在洞穴守护地盘及照料仔犬，狩猎群体返回洞穴后，会吐出食物喂养其他犬只。

Hyenas or hyaenas (from Greek ὕαινα hýaina) are the animals of the family Hyaenidae /haɪˈɛnᵻdiː/ of the feliform suborder of the Carnivora. With only four extant species, it is the fifth-smallest biological family in the Carnivora, and one of the smallest in the class Mammalia. Despite their low diversity, hyenas are unique and vital components of most African ecosystems.
