Outlook.com的前身是Hotmail。Hotmail于1995年由杰克·史密斯和印度企业家沙比尔·巴蒂亚创建，并于1996年7月4日（美国独立日）开始商业运作，是互联网上最早的webmail服务之一。Hotmail最初由风险投资公司德丰杰投资支撑运营。到1997年12月，它已经拥有了850万名用户。

1997年12月底，Hotmail被微软收购，并成为MSN服务的一部分。由于针对世界不同地区的市场作了本地化，Hotmail迅速流行起来并成为全球最大的网络邮件服务提供商。

Outlook.com is a web-based suite of email, contacts, tasks, and calendaring services from Microsoft. One of the world's first webmail services, it was founded in 1996 as Hotmail (stylized as HoTMaiL) by Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith in Mountain View, California, and headquartered in Sunnyvale. Hotmail was acquired by Microsoft in 1997 for an estimated $400 million and launched as MSN Hotmail, later rebranded to Windows Live Hotmail as part of the Windows Live suite of products.
