由于H_n(X,Z)非零，故X是紧致及可定向的。

当n > 1时，虽然H₁(X,Z) = {0}，不过并不表示X是单连通的，即X的基本群未必是平凡的，只表示其基本群是完满群。（参看Hurewicz定理）

有理同调球面的定义与上述类似，不过用有理系数的同调群代替。
