Heterocyclic antidepressant
A heterocyclic antidepressant inhibits the nerve cells' ability to reuptake norepinphrine and serotonin. This group of drugs, once the mainstay of treatment, includes tricyclic (tertiary amines amitriptyline and imipramine and their secondary amine metabolites nortriptyline and desipramine), modified tricyclic, and tetracyclic antidepressants.
