朝鲜（拼音：cháo xiān，注音：ㄔㄠˊ　ㄒㄧㄢ）或韩国一词在中文可指文化上的朝鲜，包括地理上的朝鲜半岛（韩半岛）或朝鲜的主体民族朝鲜族（韩民族）。现时朝鲜半岛北部的政权称为 朝鲜民主主义人民共和国（朝鲜），南部的政权则称为 大韩民国（韩国），因此两者都作为文化和地域上的称谓。

1910年，“日韩合并”后，日本使用「朝鲜」的名称，并设立朝鲜总督府。而在上海成立的「朝鲜民族流亡政府」则自称为“大韩民国临时政府”。“大韩民国”的国号来源于“大韩帝国”。

1945年，朝鲜半岛光复之后，1948年成立的南方资本主义政权沿用了临时政府时期的国名，即大韩民国（ 韩国）。北方的**政权则沿用了日治时期的名称——朝鲜，定国号为 朝鲜民主主义人民共和国。此后政治意义上的“朝鲜”仅指朝鲜半岛北部。

Korea, called Chosŏn (Korean:조선; Hanja: 朝鲜) in North Korea and Hanguk (Korean:한국; Hanja: 韩国) in South Korea, is a Northeast Asian territory that is divided into two distinct sovereign states: North Korea, formally the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), and South Korea, formally the Republic of Korea (ROK). Located on the Korean Peninsula, Korea is bordered by China to the northwest and Russia to the northeast. It is separated from Japan to the east by the Korea Strait and the Sea of Japan (East Sea).
