红柱石是一种硅酸铝矿物，其化学成分为Al₂SiO₅。其中含Al₂O₃为63.1%，含SiO₂为36.9%，有时也含有锰、铁等杂质。

红柱石晶体为斜方晶系，呈柱状，横截面接近正方形，集合体为粒状或放射状，也有形似菊花的为菊花石，颜色一般为灰白色、肉红色或褐色，具有玻璃光泽，硬度为6.5-7.5，比重为3.13-3.16。

红柱石为变质岩产物，多存在于片岩中。

红柱石在1380℃时会分解为富铝红柱石，是一种高级的耐火材料，色泽透明艳丽的红柱石可作为饰品，是一种宝石。

红柱石在1789年第一次在西班牙的安达露西亚正式公开发布，所以在欧洲文本中被称为“安达露西亚石”。

Andalusite is an aluminium nesosilicate mineral with the chemical formula Al₂SiO₅. Andalusite is trimorphic with kyanite and sillimanite, being the lower pressure mid temperature polymorph. At higher temperatures and pressures, andalusite may convert to sillimanite. Thus, as with its other polymorphs, andalusite is an aluminosilicate index mineral, providing clues to depth and pressures involved in producing the host rock.
