高斯映射可以在曲面的整体上定义，当且仅当曲面是可定向的，此时其映射度等于欧拉示性数的一半。无论何时高斯映射都可以在曲面的局部上（即曲面的一小块上）定义。高斯映射的雅可比行列式等于高斯曲率，而高斯映射的微分称为形状算子。

高斯以此为题在1825年写了一份初稿，并在1827年发表。

In differential geometry, the Gauss map (named after Carl F. Gauss) maps a surface in Euclidean space R to the unit sphere S. Namely, given a surface X lying in R, the Gauss map is a continuous map N: X → S such that N(p) is a unit vector orthogonal to X at p, namely the normal vector to X at p.
