This bicarbonate-rich mucus protects the gastric mucosa from our own gastric acid, so it won't get digested along with food. TED-Ed(视频版) Alcohol may also slow down stomach emptying, which could lead to increased production of gastric acid. TED-Ed(视频版) For example, it produces an enzyme called urease that helps protect it from the surrounding gastric acid. Another common symptom is regurgitation, where undigested food and a bit of gastric acid go back up into the mouth, and can cause acidic taste, or even damage of the enamel layer of teeth. Why this should have happened is not entirely clear, but one possible explanation is that sleeping on the left keeps the junction between the stomach and oesophagus above the level of the gastric acid. When the pressure is lower than normal, which means the sphincter becomes looser, gastric acid reaches the esophagus and the pH of the esophagus drops from to around 4 - which is called acid reflux.

Gastric acid 胃酸![]() Gastric acid, also called gastric juice or stomach acid, is a digestive fluid, formed in the stomach. It is composed of hydrochloric acid (HCl) .05–0.1 M (roughly 5,000–10,000 parts per million) potassium chloride (KCl) and sodium chloride (NaCl). The acid plays a key role in digestion of proteins, by activating digestive enzymes, and making ingested proteins unravel so that digestive enzymes break down the long chains of amino acids. Gastric acid is produced by cells in the lining of the stomach, which are coupled in feedback systems to increase acid production when needed. Other cells in the stomach produce bicarbonate, a base, to buffer the fluid, ensuring that it does not become too acidic. These cells also produce mucus, which forms a viscous physical barrier to prevent gastric acid from damaging the stomach. Cells in the beginning of the small intestine, or duodenum, further produce large amounts of bicarbonate to completely neutralize any gastric acid that passes further down into the digestive tract. |
