α粒子相当于氦的原子核可被纸所阻挡，β粒子相当于电子可被铝箔所阻挡，γ射线则具有高穿透性。

伽玛射线（英文：Gamma ray），或γ射线是原子衰变裂解时放出的射线之一。此种电磁波波长在0.01奈米以下，穿透力很强，又携带高能量，容易造成生物体细胞内的脱氧核糖核酸（DNA）断裂进而引起细胞突变、造血功能缺失、癌症等疾病。它可以杀死细胞，因此也可以作医疗之用，杀死癌细胞。

1900年由法国科学家P.V.维拉德（Paul Ulrich Villard）发现，他将含镭的氯化钡通过阴极射线，从照片记录上看到辐射穿过0.2毫米的铅箔，拉塞福称这一贯穿力非常强的辐射为γ射线，是继α射线、β射线后发现的第三种原子核射线。1913年，γ射线被证实为是电磁波，由原子核内部自受激态至基态时所放出来，波长短于0.2 埃，和X射线特性相似但具有比X射线还要强的穿透能力。γ射线通过物质并与原子相互作用时会产生光电效应、康普顿效应和正负电子对效应。γ射线即使使用较厚材料阻挡一般也仍然有部分射线泄漏，所以通常只能用半吸收厚度来定量材料的阻隔效果。半吸收厚度是指入射射线强度减弱到一半时阻隔物体的厚度。半吸收厚度其数值d（1/2）=ln2/μ≈0.693/μ，μ表示阻隔物材料的射线吸收系数。材料的射线吸收系数与射线频率、能量以及材料种类有关，一般原子序数高和密度高的元素构成的材料其γ射线吸收系数也较高。普通放射源如Cs-137放射源产生的γ射线在铝、铁、铜、铅中的半吸收厚度分别约为3.2cm、2.6cm、1.4cm和0.6cm。
