无品吉他，也就是没有琴衍的吉他，指法是直接在指板上的特定位置按压琴弦。一支“有品指板”的弦乐器就是在指板上嵌入琴衍，因此有没有品，在指法上几乎是没什么差异的，但也有些地方有分别: (1)由于在无品吉他上没有琴衍，所以在指法上需要更精确的定位。 (2)在声音的共振上两者有些差异，所以无品吉他需要较特殊的扩大器才能得到同等的音量。 (3)无品吉他在滑音的过程中表现得更自然，并且不会有声音的断层。由于无品吉他的声音过小，在大多数的西方音乐中较为少见，无品电吉他也并不普及。但在另一方面，无品贝斯却有很高的人气，相当普遍。其中又以无品电贝斯在爵士乐、放克及R&B音乐中特别的受欢迎。
