人类脚趾在生理学上扮演的意义不亚于双手，在演化学的研究中相当重要。现代人的双脚绝大多数只能用于行走，脚趾只适用于行走时稳定步伐之用。但在生理学上，脚趾的功能并非一成不变，可以做简单的动作，或非正式且些微地取代双手之部分功能。人类双脚的大拇趾构造较其余各趾独立，是足部的灵魂部位，也是足部重心，也因此只要能配合食趾（第二根脚趾），就能做出和手近似的动作。
脚趾在构造上并不利于抓握，但某些状况下例外。失去双手的人可以透过后天训练的方式，将脚趾的功能发扬为双手的功能。一般双手正常的人也会基于随性或趣味，用脚趾来做一些简单的事物，例如抓握木杆、捡拾小东西等。脚趾当做手来使用，俗称「脚技」，意谓「脚的技能」，一些年轻的女孩会在非正式的场合玩，有穿袜子和不穿袜子的玩法。
