主教是基督宗教的高级圣职人员职称，为天主教、东正教与圣公会采用，词源自希腊文「episkopos」（επίσκοπος），即「epi」（由上往下）及「skopos」（观察者），意为监督（overseer）。依据初期教会的传统，祝圣主教代表授予圣职圣事的圆满性。主教即是借着圣灵／圣神被祝圣为教会中的牧人及管理者，也是教义的导师及圣职敬礼的司祭。在一般基督宗教主流教会，指耶稣基督派遣使徒／宗徒继续实行祂的使命，到了第一世纪末至第二世纪初就形成了主教的制度。
