By 1144, the exposed Kingdom of Edessa  had been lost to the Seljuk Turks.

The crusaders would continue their martial  activity after capturing Jerusalem, creating the Crusader States of Outremer, which would gradually  expand to include Tripoli, Edessa, and Antioch.

Three other Crusader states were founded  around this time, located farther north – the County of Tripoli under Raymond IV of Toulouse,   the Principality of Antioch under Bohemond, and the County of Edessa under Baldwin of Boulogne.
