    大公会议（或称公会议、普世公会议、普教会议）是传统基督教中有普遍代表意义的的世界性主教会议，咨审表决重要教务和教理争端。公会议英文是 英语：Ecumenical Councils 源自希腊文 Οικουμένη，意思是“普世性的”。而其中对基督教教义有深远影响的基督教早期会议是第一次尼西亚公会议、第一次君士坦丁堡公会议、以弗所公会议和造成日后东西分裂的迦克墩公会议。在公元1054年，东西方教会大分裂。自此之后，东正教（即希腊正教）只信守首七次大公会议所确立之大公会议信条。虽然第四次君士坦丁堡会议是在教会大分裂之前举行，却不获东正教承认。故此，今天的东正教只承认七次大公会议，而罗马天主教则认为是八次。而教会大分裂之后的大公会议由罗马天主教单方面举行，所以内容不为东正教承认。
